Our Flagship Projects
€112,000 Town & Village Renewal Funding
Milltownpass Tidy Towns have secured €112,000 under the Town & Village Renewal Scheme (TVRS) for public realm enhancements, including new approach road signage and raised beds, new hanging basket poles and seating areas, and a new green space in the village for the community to enjoy!
Milltownpass Bog & Woodland Trail
In early 2023 Milltownpass Tidy Towns, in collaboration with the National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS), officially launched a new 1.2km woodland trail at Milltownpass Bog Natural Heritage Area (NHA). Complete with wildlife sculptures, nesting boxes and seating, this project is still in its early stages with bog rehabilitation works, and trail extensions currently in the works !
Sensory Garden & Polytunnel at St Josephs NS
After securing €10,000 in AXA Parks funding, our TidyTowns Volunteers spent over 200 voluntary hours completing the design, project management and build of a new Sensory Garden and Polytunnel for our local National School (St. Josephs NS Milltownpass)
Sustainability Projects
In July 2023 Milltownpass Tidy Towns unveiled a new bottle cap mural in the centre of the village as a means to highlight the volume of single-use plastics in circulation and their impact on the environment. Read on to learn about this and other exciting sustainability projects being undertaken.
Milltown River Restoration
Over the past number of years Milltownpass Tidy Towns have been heavily invested in the restoration and preservation of our local rivers through the use of citizen science investigation to assess the water quality and likely pressures, and through awareness raising activity such as our now annual Milltown River Family Fun Day. In 2023 we won the Waters and Communities National Tidy Towns Award for our efforts in this space!
Love Milltownpass Litter Stations
As a means to engage the wider community of Milltownpass to help keep our village litter free, we designed, commissioned and installed a number of 2 Minute Street Clean stations at key litter black spots around our village.
Bus Shelters
Over the past number of years we have actively engaged with the National Transport Authority (NTA) & Westmeath County Council to secure Bus Shelters for Milltownpass as part of the NTA'S country wide plan and are excited to see our efforts come to fruition over the coming weeks!
Danu Celtic Goddess of Nature
We recently commissioned a sculpture which has been installed in the centre of the village to celebrate the richness of biodiversity of our local rivers and peatlands, and to connect the village with the newly launched Bog & Woodland Trail at Milltownpass Bog NHA.
Millview Planting
Millview is the only residential estate in Milltownpass. This year we completed a new planting scheme to brighten the entrance to the estate.
Tackling Dereliction
As part of a concerted effort by our committee to tackle dereliction our team of volunteers identified the 3 main buildings in need of attention and undertook the work involved in minor repairs and painting to bring these buildings back to their former glory and enhance the overall aesthetic of the village.
The Big PowerWash Challenge
Over a period of many years our beautiful cobblelock paving in the centre of the village had become faded and very dull, hiding its pattern and colors. We put out the call to members of our community to take part in the “Big Power Wash Challenge” and we were not disappointed. Over the course of two weeks, a team of 5 volunteers spent a total of 80 hours painstakingly power washing the cobblelock to reveal its pattern for the first time in approx. 20 years!
